ABSTRACT:
This study is an attempt to give an
overview of Gastro Retentive Drug Delivery System (GRDDS), Floating Drug
Delivery System (FDDS) in
particular. GRDDS has various advantages over conventional drug delivery system
and thus has attracted the interest of many industrialists recently. This study
highlights these advantages of GRDDS and Floating DDS as well as the future
scope of GRDDS in the pharmaceutical world. Some FDDS have shown the capability to accommodate these
variations without affecting drug release. This review mainly focuses on
various physiological considerations for development of FDDS, and highlights
recent technological developments including new dosage forms and their
production techniques. Alternatives to the existing in vitro methods for
evaluating floating dosage forms will be discussed, and a critical analysis of
the existing literature on FDDS, identifying the potential areas for future
research, is provided.
